(стр 83) "A therapist friend of mine, Susan Hochstedler, who often refers patients for medication treatment, has heard her clients talk about psychiatrists as though they are sophisticated auto mechanics: “Patients think their psychiatrist can open up their brain like the hood of a car and check various dipsticks,” she said.

“‘Yep, it looks like your serotonin is low, we’ll need to top that off with a little Prozac, but your dopamine is fine, we’ll check that again in six months.’”

Of course, this is not the way it works. While it is true that most of our drugs affect neurotransmitters in various ways, when psychiatrists start using what I call neurobabble, beware, because we rarely know what we are talking about. I fall into this habit with patients all the time. When I find myself using phrases like “chemical imbalance” and “serotonin deficiency,” it is usually because I’m trying to convince a reluctant patient to take a medication. Using these words makes their illness seem more biological, taking some of the stigma away from having a mental illness.

The theory makes intuitive sense, explaining its enduring popularity. But the problem is that there is no direct evidence that a serotonin or norepinephrine deficiency is involved, despite thousands of studies that have attempted to demonstrate such a deficiency. Notice that I do not say that there is no evidence for the monoamine hypothesis. Over the years, tantalizing findings have surfaced here and there. But the problem is that getting precise measures of brain neurotransmitters has proven devilishly tricky."
